About the Friends of Longley Woods

The Friends are very new, forming in the summer of 2004 from just a few keen local residents to an impressive forty on the members list! We came together from a need to take care of the area of woodland which is suffering from neglect and abuse. Longley Woods in Newsome has a history dating back hundreds of years and the legacy of Longley Hall is still standing today. This beautiful woodland, also known as Bluebell Wood for its stunning show of flowers in the spring, is now benefiting from our hard work. The wood lies alongside Longley Golf Course and we have developed a strong working partnership with the members of the Golf club. We are continuing to work towards returning the wood and the surrounding area back to its former glory and have already run activities such as nest box making, spring bulb planting and litter clean ups.
