Bluebell Walk, May 2005
The first Saturday in May saw the sixth event of the Friends of Longley Woods. Since last summer the group's activities have ranged from litter picks, to daffodil bulb planting, to bird box making and to the most recent guided bluebell walk.
At 3pm on a windy Saturday afternoon the Friends of Longley Woods and several local people from the Swallow Court Social Education Centre set off from Longley Park Golf Club to enjoy the show of bluebells in full flower.
With her fountain of local knowledge, Margaret Clements, an active and founder member of the group, led the way through the wood. There we were able to check up on the bird boxes previously put up in February with the Huddersfield Sea Cadets. Already we could see large patches of bluebells waving at us in the wind. As we made our way further into the wood we realised they were just a taste of things to come.
The steep climb through Ashinghirst Plantation was worth the effort as we were rewarded with a stunning show of these beautiful flowers and enjoyed the perfume as we made our way back.
Thanks to Margaret for guiding the walk.
